Saturday December 3^rd from 2-6pm Cornerstone Garden (414-B State Street) in Greensboro is hosting their annual Wassail Tea Event, free for the community. The warm beverage will be offered by various merchants along State Street including; Cornerstone Garden, The Secret Tea Room, Lillo Bella Shoes, Linnea’s Plus Size Boutique, Rubenesque for Less, The Saltbox, Mark Holder Jeweller, Tyler White Art Gallery and Eclectic by Nature. Wassail started out as an Old English greeting dating back to 1066 and meant “be hale” or “be of good health.” State Street Shoppes would like to share the toast of good health with you.

At 2:00, St PiusX’s hand bell choir will begin their Angelic performance among the beautiful greenery at Cornerstone Garden. The sound of the bells and the passion in their hearts are sure to bring chills, easily warmed with various recipes of Wassail Tea. A surprise from the North Pole will take requests from children to Santa Claus, ARA trio will provide banjo acoustics and Ginger Waynick & Phil Sparks will provide jazzy song throughout the garden from past holiday favorites.

Operation Smile will accept donations for their cause during the event. Since 1982, Operation Smile through the help of dedicated medical volunteers, has provided more than 2 million patient evaluations and over 200,000 free surgeries for children and young adults born with cleft lips, cleft palates and other facial deformities. Many visitors came to Cornerstone Garden by Diana Digs Dirt (414-B State Street) to love on the Chihuahuas, pick up their plants, give a donation and take advantage of the 20% deal on all clothing lines within the boutique.

Holiday music, great weather and adorable dogs made the perfect afternoon for me and for others.

Chihuahuas sometimes have the stereotype of being squeaky or yippee barking dogs and many are not. Sparky, who I foster is loving, calm, low maintenance and hardly ever barks. He is great with kids because my 7-year-old lugs him around like a sack of potatoes.

Some are just looking for a small place in your home to live out the rest of their lives. Many have been abused and need a second chance. Below is a Chinese Crested looking for a home too.

The Red Hat Society gave a generous donation after their tea party at The Secret Tea Room next door. Thank you ladies and come back any time, you all looked fabulous!

Yuletide Camellia is a must have for the holidays and could be placed at your front entrance for visitors to admire before planting in the ground. They also make great gifts!

Below is a variety of Camellia called “Jean May” and is spectacular with its shell pink color and ruffled petals for a semi-double bloom, resembling a rose. Jean May needs some shade and is the perfect selection for espalier.

The Camellia shrub below is another specimen called “Autumn Spirit”. The flowers are in the peony form and the fuchsia pink coloration makes it an ideal fall bloomer accented with white garden mums or asters planted at its base.

Stephanie Golden Camellia (featured below) is a hot pink, semi-double upright-growing shrub with blooms from October through November and possibly December.

Survivor is the perfect plant for moonlight or memory gardens because of the single white flowers appearing in autumn.

Survivor is a tall camellia with the potential of reaching 25 feet.

Camellias benefit from good soil and some shade. All varieties of Camellia shrubs should be pruned on tax day or April 15th and fertilization 2-3 times per year beginning in spring after the first flowering session.

Fall and Winter flowering Camellias will greet you throughout the garden including, those pictured below.

Plants make the perfect “green” gift. These beautiful shrubs are also locally grown.

We also have several different bulbs including; pink daffodils, yes pink, crocus, dutch iris and ornamental onion.

Bulbs can be planted right up until December, as long as the ground is not frozen. They require a 2 month chilling period.

Other gift ideas include locally made soaps and wow, do they smell heavenly. Some varieties are made from Goat’s Milk.

Free Iris Plants from Cornerstone Garden by Diana Digs Dirt-Making Way for a New Open Air Farmers Market

   

Cornerstone Garden by Diana Digs Dirt is giving away a piece of the past to make room for future plans of a farmers market located at 414-B State Street in Greensboro. Cornerstone Garden, formally My Secret Garden has a swath of violet iris bulbs planted along the fence line in desperate need of division. Saturday November 19^th 10am-4:00pm approximately 100 iris plants will be given away and any donations will be collected for the NC Chihuahua Rescue and Transport, www.chihuahua-rescue.com. They ask to please bring plastic bags to carry plants home.

Cornerstone Garden currently supports local artists and crafters by consigning their goods within the shop and plans to provide space for area farmers, bakers and other specialty vendors to sell goods on the grounds of Greensboro’s beautiful urban oasis.

German Iris plants add vertical interest to your perennial beds and should be placed towards the rear of your space. The flowers are great for centerpieces and very easy to grow. Try planting them along a drive if you have erosion problems or along a stream. German iris comes in various colors including pure white called Immortality, one of my favorites for moonlight viewing, fragrant and reblooms.

Linda has always been fascinated by fashion and as a young child, envisioned how they would look on her. State Street Shoppes held their first event as a business community benefitting Friends for an Earlier Breast Cancer Test October 1, 2011 at The Secret Tea Room and Cornerstone Garden.

Over 40 pieces were shown from various merchants of State Street Shoppes.

The models were high energy and looked amazing in merchandise including jewelry, accessories, glasses, clothing, and shoes.

Glass frames were provided by Earnhardt Optical, located on State Street.

One of our models Lynne, an insurance agent for Harbour Insurance, located on State Street. She looked fabulous in the clothing line available at Cornerstone Garden.

Linda is not camera shy.

Grace elegantly strolled the runway in James Hogan Couture.

Cut loose clothing line is highly desirable because of the durable fabric and comfortable feel. Amy looks wonderful.
